Leaving Kodiak

We did not get to eat at the senior center. They were having a dinner last night, so they did not have noon meal. So we went back to the King's Diner and had breakfast.

Then we looked at S. Herman's log chapel at St. Innocent's Seminary which is a smaller replica of anolder chursh.



After that we got in line for the ferry

LAST DAY IN KODIAK

We spent most of yesterday with Lynn trying to fish. The first group of pictures is from Buskin River State Park.Airport from Buskin River State Park.

Today we are relaxing at the coffee shop, then we will go to lunch at the Kodiak Senior Center. The campground hosts at NSRP told us about their lunches. It will be a good chance to visit with locals. After that we will go out to Ft. Abercrombie to see if the military museum is open. From there, we get in line for our ferry to Homer.

Kodiak 5

We didn't even try to get on the ferry today. We would have had to get up at 5:00 AM and drive to the ferry by six, and we were on the bottom of the list. So we'll just go out as scheduled, tomorrow at 5:30 PM.

VFW Kodiak. It has a couple of apartments and a laundromat in the lower level.

The VFW RV Park is opposite the VFW building. It has a view of Pillar Mountain in the ackgrond.

Yesterday afternoon it cleared up a little, so we drove up Pillar Mountain. It has great views, but is very windy.

After the drive, I went to the Middle School to watch the Kodiak Island Drummers (KID) practice. The director was working with some new students and it was fun to watch. He even had a couple of kids try to teach me a little drumming. (Operative word "try"--it's a lot harder than the kids make it look!)

Kodiak 4

We hung around town yesterday. We went to the ferry office to see if we could change our tickets to Wednesday's ferry since the fishing and tour boats were grounded due to weather.

We stopped in at the Alutiiq Museum to buy two Alutiiq dolls I had seen a few days ago. Thy were made by Coral Chernoff, Alutiiq of Kodiak. The doll on the left has a seal gut parka and fishskin boots. The doll on the right has felt clothes with fur trim and is carrying a clam bucket. Coral carved the heads of both out of driftwood in the style of tradtional play dolls that are int the museum. She also made sample dolls and other traditional toystoys for kids to play with in the corner of the museum.

The interior of the russian Orthodox Church, Kodiak--I sent pictures of the exterior a day or so ago.

The WWII bunker at Ft. Abercrombie which is a military museum. There are military remains all over Miller Point and also out Chiniak Highway where we wer a couple of days ago.

We went back to the ferry to get on the stand-by list. The ferry is delayed 12 hours, so it leaves Thursday AM instead of tonight. Our chances are slim, since our RV is so big. It also looks as if our Friday ferry will be delayed, as this boat has to come back for us.

So we are just hanging out at the great cafe and internet spot we have found.

Kodiak Part 3

The first picture is of the Kodiak Island Drummers--a youth percussion group. They were great.

In the morning Monday we started out with sourdough pancakes (from a 100 year old starter) at a breakfast given by the 4 H clubs of Kodiak

Then we drove out to the end of the Chiniak and Pasaghak roads (about 100 miles total). We have now been to the end of the 3 main roads. There is only one other and it is unmaintained, so we did not try it.

On the drive we saw 15 Bald Eagles--2 nesting, 3 flying and the rest sitting in trees.

We got back to Kodiak about 4 and went to the high school for a Celebration of Cultures. First a delicious potluck, then a bunch of local performers.
